For the second time in the past 12 months, I found myself in the local emergency room this morning around 4:00. I was there for the same reason as the first time -- a gallstone stuck in the bile duct. It was extremely painful, maybe not as painful as birthing a child, but it ranks up there as one of the most painful experiences of my life.
The morning transpired almost the same as last April, except this time I overcame my horrific phobia of needles and allowed the medical staff to shoot me up with drugs to quell the nausea and to deaden the pain. (Last time my fear of needles got the best of me and I remained in agony for an additional two hours as staff tried to come up with an oral alternative.)
Regarding the latter, it was supposed to make me a bit woozy for 3 or 4 hours, yet here I am 9 hours later and I'm still very, very wobbly. I think the reason the drug hasn't worn off as soon as expected is because I take so few drugs of this nature. While many folks will pop aspirin, tylenol or ibuprofen like candy, I've got to be in serious pain before I can muster the nerve to take any of the three!
So, once the cobwebs clear from me head, I seriously need to consider the option of having my gall bladder removed. The most logical resolution to this chronic problem is to do just that. However, I'm not always the most rational person in the world. :) I simply don't like to commit to things that fall outside my regular routine and going under the knife certainly fits that bill.

Hi
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear of your trip to the
E R. I had my gall bladder out years ago when it was major-MAJOR surgery. Now it is done as an out patient procedure laprascopicly. (sp)
Anyway - I am very scared of ANY procedure too. I even brought a picture of myself when I was three to my dentist to remind him that he was working on a three year old, not an adult. The picture remains in my file. :-)
I hope you are feeling better.
Gail
peace.....
Get well, RT. Thinking of you!
ReplyDeleteAs someone who has had both gall stones and given birth, I can tell you that gall stones are much more painfull than labor pains, and just as exhausting.
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better soon...
