What Else Could He Say?

Trey Smith

In a result that isn't all that surprising, Jerry Sandusky was ruled a violent sex offender and was given a sentence long enough that means he most likely will die in prison. The former Defensive Coordinator of the Penn State University football team had already been convicted of 45 counts of child sexual abuse.

Also not surprising is that Sandusky continues to claim he's innocent. What else could he say? His legal team plans to file an appeal and, if this is granted, he certainly doesn't want to return to court having admitted that he indeed is a pervert! He doesn't want the stain of his crimes to impact his wife and family. And he's certainly thinking of himself as a prison inmate -- child molesters often are targets of other inmates.

There is one other explanation: Maybe he is innocent and the victim of a witch hunt. I find that very, very hard to believe in light of the evidence presented, but there always is a wee outside chance that it is true.

In the eyes of the court and public opinion, it is NOT true; Jerry Sandusky must pay for his crimes against children. While I'm sure his sentence offers a measure of justice to his many victims, this is a sad case all around. Childhoods have been destroyed and lives have been tarnished. The only solace for the boys Sandusky molested is that by standing up to face their molester, they have prevented further victims of his depravity.
