Numbers That Don't Add Up

Trey Smith

For months I've been sharing with you the wacky employment numbers released by the federal government. There have been many months in which the nation created less jobs than the break even point and yet -- inexplicably -- the unemployment rate has decreased. That makes no sense whatsoever!

The most recent report is just as baffling. It has been reported that 163,000 new jobs were created in July -- significantly higher than the predictions -- and yet the unemployment rate increased from 8.3 to 8.4%.

So, let me see if I understand all of this. When we don't create enough jobs to keep up with population trends, the unemployment rate goes down and when we do create more than enough jobs to keep up with population trends, the unemployment rate goes up?

What kinds of mushrooms are these people eating?
