We - Control

And there's this -- isn't it absurd that a state...could leave sexual life without any sort of control? Whoever wanted, whenever and however much... Completely unscientifically, like wild animals.
~ from We by Yevgeny Zamyatin ~
Evangelical Christians seem to spend an exorbitant amount of time and energy concerned about other people's sexual proclivities. If you listen to their political and social leaders, homosexuality and promiscuity are responsible for the downfall of US society. If they had their way in the public sphere, the day would come in which both homosexuality and promiscuity would be patently illegal and -- who knows -- maybe subject to death by stoning!

But it wouldn't stop there. Once they had dispatched with these two evil "sins," I have every confidence that they would branch out to include more sexual practices as fodder for their watchful eyes. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they outlawed any type of sexual act that did not involve both a penis and a vagina. I can even imagine them decreeing that the missionary position is the only proper position and anyone suspected of copulating in a different manner would be in big doo doo.

And why should anyone care about the sexual practices of consenting adults? It's all about control! If you can convince or force citizens to spend all their time censoring themselves and their neighbors, they will be too preoccupied with all that nonsense to notice all the shenanigans the ruling class is up to.

This series of posts will be based on Yevgeny Zamyatin's novel, We, one of the books that inspired George Orwell to write 1984.
