Is the Time Ripe For "Thinking Outside the Box"?

So maybe this is the “fuck ‘em” moment. Maybe this is the moment when enviros and clean-energy advocates stop being quite so polite and deferential. Maybe more people will climb trees located on mountaintop-removal sites in an effort to stop the blasting. Maybe more climate activists will think about the climate change not as an international problem to be resolved in an air-conditioned meeting hall, but as a guerrilla war to be fought in the streets.

I realize it may be nothing more than wishful thinking, but maybe a portion of the citizenry is awakening to the fact that playing the politics game by the establishment rules isn't such an effective strategy anymore. On issue after issue, our elected leaders and rightward-leaning judicial system only seem concerned with the corporate state and not the health, safety and well-being of the vast majority.

When we play by THEIR rules on THEIR turf, we are certain to be dissatisfied with the meager results we might obtain. Too often, those results are nothing more than window dressing so that business can continue as usual unimpeded.

A popular sentiment is that we need to "think outside the box," but few people have seemed willing to go that far. Most of the strategies that mainline environmental, peace and human rights activists employ are neatly folded into the box.

Well, the box ain't working for us. So, it's time to toss it to the curb!
