Boehner Has Obama's Back

If you scanned the headlines late yesterday, you might have thought something momentous occurred in the US House on Friday. A resolution offered by Rep. John Boehner rebuked the president for his decision to bomb Libya without getting Congressional approval. But before you get to thinking that those nasty Republicans simply have it in for Barack, you need to look beyond the surface.

While an official rebuke SOUNDS severe, it was only offered as a mechanism to sidetrack a far more stringent proposal by Rep. Dennis Kucinich "which called for a withdrawal of the U.S. military from the air and naval operations in and around Libya within 15 days."

In reality, what Boehner's non-binding resolution accomplished was to allow our dear president with the ability to continue bombing the hell out of Libya with little more than a tepid slap on the wrists.

This exercise only underscores the notion that there is little difference between mainstream Democrats and Republicans. There is no question that some members of each party occupy the "radical" fringe -- both left and right -- but the vast majority of them agree on most of the major issues.

Who would have thought that Boehner would go to bat for Obama to beat back some members of the president's own party?
