Tao Bible - Proverbs 13:20

He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
~ King James version ~

A fool can walk with the wise and a sage can walk with a fool.
~ possible Taoist alternative ~
From the Christian perspective, who we choose as our friends and comrades says as much about them as ourselves. A person's virtue is judged by the company he keeps.

From the Taoist perspective, we are who we are. A fool can keep the company of the wise and still be a fool. Likewise, a sage may choose to be a living example for fools and will still be wise.

  1. It's all a matter of influence. If you are influenced by fools, you will be a fool. Better to be influenced by a sage.

Of course it takes some wisdom to recognize who's who.
