Being great, it flows
~ Gia-fu Feng and Jane English translation, published by Vintage Books, 1989 ~

Great means passing
~ Derek Lin translation, from Tao Te Ching: Annotated & Explained, published by SkyLight Paths, 2006 ~

Something that great lasts.
~ Ron Hogan rendition, from Beatrice.com, 2004 ~
A great river begins as a single droplet. From that one solitary bead, others merge together. Soon, the water is a trickle. It slowly gains in size and force transforming from a creek to a stream and then to a mighty river.

No matter how big and fierce it is when it joins another river, a lake or the ocean, it's good to remember that its flow began with one drop of water.
