What Has Happened to My Country?

I'm casually reading an article on Mother Jones about how the hardcore in the birther movement STILL believe that Barack Obama is a fer'ner.

Since President Obama released his birth certificate two weeks ago — and perhaps more significantly, since President Obama announced the killing of Osama Bin Laden — the ranks of America's birthers have thinned considerably. According to a recent Washington Post poll, just 10 percent of Americans now strongly suspect that the President was not born in the United States; the number of true believers is even smaller...

What really jumped out at me in the snippet featured above is that "the killing of Osama Bin Laden" plays such a key role. Before Obama ordered the execution, a significant number of my countrymen doubted whether or not Obama was a bona fide natural US citizen, but, now that the SEALS have double tapped the bogeyman, a lot of folks are saying, "He MUST be one of us."

What does this say about us? That to be a true blue American a person must be a big fan of murder? That we're okay with a leader who guns down people we don't like?

What kind of people have we become?
