God and Envy

This one is a no-brainer. There are numerous passages in the Bible which explicitly state that God is a jealous entity. Envy and jealousy go hand-in-hand.

I have never understood how a being that is said to be perfect could feel either envy or jealousy. Envy is defined as "a feeling of discontent and resentment aroused by and in conjunction with desire for the possessions or qualities of another." Jealousy is built upon envy.

Because we humans view ourselves as distinct and separate entities, we often desire what other perceived separate entities possess. But what could a perfect God desire if he truly is the Alpha & the Omega? If God is inside each of us, then he is part of everything which excludes the concept of "other."

Consequently, if God is jealous, then is he jealous of himself?

  2. Do you have any opinions about Thomas Merton? He was a Christian that was a proponent of interfaith understanding. He fellowshipped with the Dalai Lama, D.T. Suzuki and Thich Nhat Hanh. He wrote a book titled,"The Way of Chuang Tzu" this is full of wonderful insights. Do you have any opinions about the way he expressed his faith?
