Double Whammy

While the politicians and pundits keep telling us the "recession is over" and that we're "heading in the right direction," the statistics seem to tell an altogether different story. While there is no question that many on Wall Street are getting back on track, the rest of us don't seem to be faring so well.

Item #1 The Poverty Rate Continues to Climb
The U.S. poverty rate rose to 14.3 percent in 2009 from 13.2 percent the year before, bringing the percentage of the population living in poverty to the highest level since 1994, as the economic downturn took its toll on jobs, the U.S. government said on Thursday. The U.S. Census Bureau said 43.6 million people, or one in seven Americans, lived in poverty last year, up from 39.8 million in 2008...
Item #2 The Number of Uninsured Americans Is at an All-Time High
In a reflection of the battered economy, the number of people without health insurance rose sharply last year to 50.7 million — an all time high — according to data released Thursday by the Census Bureau. That pushed the rate of uninsured Americans to 16.7 percent last year from 15.4 percent in 2008, when there were 46.3 million uninsured. It was one of the largest single year increases since the Census starting tracking the figure in 1987. Nearly every demographic and geographic group posted a rise in the uninsured rate — with the exception of children, who remained stable at about 10 percent. The sharpest jumps were in the Midwest and South, although all areas of the country saw increases...
If all that didn't seem bad enough, I'm going to add a seemingly unrelated story to the mix. This one has to do with FedEx.
FedEx Corp., the package-delivery giant and economic bellwether, said Thursday that its fiscal first-quarter profit more than doubled as the global economy strengthened and trade expanded after last year’s recession...The company also plans to cut 1,700 jobs and close facilities as it combines its freight businesses...
This helps to explain why the vast majority of Americans aren't doing so well. Here we have a corporation with higher income than expected, yet despite the fact they are in the black, they will hand out 1,700 pink slips!

Now you know why the rich continue to get richer and the poor continue to stay poor.

  1. The poverty is a huge problem all the world. It´s real fact. I think so, we have to see on the poverty with real open-eyes. The world´s governments couldn´t find short-term solutions. On the other hand, they´ve to find out right methods for us.

What is a source of casue of the poverty ?

I think so, the main cause of this problem is stagnant global market. The next „stop“ presents a bad circulation of money in the world and some unhappy laws. I´m optimistic. I believe that the increase of poverty will be stopped!
