Life Defined -- Point 3

3. There is a great and final Answer to the mystery of our existence, out there, waiting for us.
As noted earlier, the Taoist doesn't believe in one solitary answer nor in one solitary question. Life contains a multitude of both. Even if such an answer did exist, a meager human would not have the capacity to understand it!

Even further, this Taoist asks: Why does it matter? Would knowing how life came to be change anything about the way we live our lives or how the world itself operates? If we look at all the adherents of various religious pathways -- people who believe they know the answer to this mystery -- one would have to surmise that it makes little difference at all since they seem to suffer from the foibles, anxieties and tribulations as the rest of us!

Of course, Taoist thought DOES stipulate that there is information available that is blocked by our egos. But this information (for lack of a better word) isn't out THERE; it's within each of us. When we set our egos aside -- via meditation -- and calm the voices within, we can tap into the energy and knowledge of life.

This post is part of a "miniseries". For an introduction, go here.

  1. i would love to know all the answers. :) but i don't think it's possible. i search for answers, but i don't pin my hopes on finding them, or feel my life is hopeless because i don't know what happened in the beginning, or what will happen in the end. (if i really believed in beginnings or endings, which i don't)

in fact, perhaps that is why religion was created... because people perceive beginnings and endings? i see neither, only a continuation, and so, in my mind, my existence does not depend on finding the answers... because i was never created and i will never be destroyed. that is my belief. and so religion is useless to me.
