We're Moving On Up

Today is a big day in our household. For the first time in a long, long while, we are getting a major appliance: an electric range. We purchased it last week and the delivery people are supposed to deliver it this afternoon.

It's not some snazzy upper end model; it's not all that different from the one we are replacing...except, hopefully, this one will work! :-)

The range that came with the house is rather old. From Day One for us, two of the four burners were kaput. We tried to replace one of the burner elements, but it still didn't work. So, we learned to make due with two burners.

The oven portion was always kind of iffy. It worked most of the time, but heated very unevenly and, every now and then, it didn't heat much at all. In the past month, it simply quit working altogether.

We had been saving up money to replace our 15 year old [used] electric dryer. However, eating is a bit more important than drying clothes, so the money was used to buy the range and we have our fingers crossed that the dryer will hold out until we can save up enough money to deal with it.

Of course, this information isn't necessarily earth-shattering, but it IS a big deal for us. I can't remember the last time we purchased a spanking brand new major appliance. Heck, in the 26 years Della and I have been together, we've only purchased one non-pre-owned vehicle. All the rest have been used...some slightly used and many very much used.

When you're poor, new things are few and far between.

  1. I will be interested to hear if you actually ever use more than two burners at a time. I hardly ever do. And I miss cooking with an open flame over gas. If I had my way, I'd have a wood-fired stove with a space for a wok, Chinese style.

Enjoy your new stove...and two extra burners to clean! We had to replace our 15-year-old refrigerator not long ago...my husband said "but we just got it."

Material things do not last forever...they aren't designed to anymore. (Except for my little Taoist immortal, Sun Buer, my 20-year-old Miata.)
