Shortly after this incident, an elder approached Zhouzi and said, “Master, some of the younger are twisting your teaching and declaring a way of licentious liberty. Some have even spoken of visiting the women outcast from the village.”

“And what have you told them?” asked Zhouzi.

“Master, that only the free can exercise freedom responsibly.”

“I could say no better,” replied Zhouzi. “Let’s instruct them in this and, unless they would bring harm to another, let them find their own way.”
