Falling Trees

Trey Smith

I'm sure most of you are familiar with the philosophical question, If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Some people answer this question with a yes (the sound is an absolute, independent of an observer) and some with a no (sound only has meaning in relation to someone hearing it). Of course, a lot of people straddle the fence, leaning one way and then the other.

I am going to tweak the question slightly. If a tree falls in a forest and someone IS around to hear it, but doesn't perceive the sound as such, does the sound still exist anyway?

Ponder on that for a bit.

  1. What is the 'as such' inferring?

    1. It could be that this "someone" perceives something other than sound OR this "someone" might not perceive anything at all.

  2. So the ant may feel, the alien may perceive an ultra violet wave, the human may hear a sound. If non were there would these phenomena still exist. If only the alien were present would there be a sound or only the violet wave? If the human then the wave did not come and only the sound?
