Line by Line - Verse 51, Line 10

brings them to their full growth, nurses them,
~ James Legge translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, 1891 ~

Developed, cared for,
~ Gia-fu Feng and Jane English translation, published by Vintage Books, 1989 ~

Grows them, educates them
~ Derek Lin translation, from Tao Te Ching: Annotated & Explained, published by SkyLight Paths, 2006 ~

cares for them, helps them grow,
~ Ron Hogan rendition, from Beatrice.com, 2004 ~
I like Derek Lin's use of the word, educates. If we pay attention to the process around and within us, we can begin to understand a smidgen of the Grand Mystery. Such understanding can instill in us a modicum of purpose and meaning. If we are able to gain sufficient wisdom, it can enrich our lives beyond measure.

  1. "Educate" comes from a Latin root that means to lead out of darkness.
