Huainanzi - Entry 17

Duplicity cannot win a single person; wholeheartedness can win a hundred people.
~ a passage from The Book of Leadership and Strategy by Thomas Cleary ~
There is no question that any of us can be fooled or tricked into believing something that is categorically untrue. There are a lot of shysters out there who have mastered the art of sophistry. They know which buttons to push and which emotive themes to tug on.

Once we realize we've been duped, trust is lost and, where there is no genuine trust, intimacy or friendship is torn asunder. Consequently, while a lie may fool somebody, it's not the same thing as winning trust.

Trust comes from sincerity and honesty.
