Tao Bible - Isaiah 5:21

Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!
~ King James version ~

The sage stays behind, thus he is ahead.
He is detached, thus at one with all.
Through selfless action, he attains fulfillment.
~ from Verse 7 of the Tao Te Ching ~
Our interpretation of ourselves is filtered through our ego-based desires. Because the ego seeks to over inflate our capabilities and knowledge, the person who recognizes his or her own sagacity is most likely to see perfection where none actually exists.
