Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured. For me, this verse provides one of the stark differences between Christian and Taoist thought.
~ King James version ~
The sage worries not about poverty nor shame.
~ possible Taoist alternative ~
In regards to the former, external sources of rules and conduct are paramount. Those who willingly submit to the external are held up high, while those who follow the beat of a different drummer are criticized.
From a Taoist perspective, the internal voice is what matters most. While education and instruction have their place, the most virtuous thing that each of us can do is to follow our own internal nature which is our bridge to the Way.
