The Muscle in Fat

Last week in the post, Labels Can Be Helpful, I noted that the FDA was preparing to release proposed menu labeling requirements for a variety of businesses, including movie theaters. Not surprisingly, the trade association that represents movie theater owners was none too happy that THEIR enterprise would be included in said requirements.

So, what did they do with their displeasure? What any self-respecting special interest group would do in that kind of situation -- They lobbied their pants off!

When the proposed regulations were released on Friday, guess who received an exemption?

The rationale for the exemption is that movie theaters -- like bowling alleys and airplanes -- don't serve food as the primary focus of the business. So, I guess it's okay to serve calorie and fat-laden crap so long as your chief business is something else.

As noted in the previous post, "a large dry popcorn purchased at Regal had 1,200 calories and 60 grams of saturated fat. Adding butter adds 260 more calories." Consequently, if an individual polishes off the tub of popcorn with a chili cheese dog, a pop and a candy bar, they will have consumed enough saturated fat in one sitting to last a week or more! Great heart health there.

And people wonder why obesity is such a problem in this country today!!
