The Simple Way, Part 65

The Simple Way
The Life & Teachings of Zhouzi
by Scott Bradley

A member of the literati asked, “Master, speaking of the original nature, Confucius said, ‘Hold it fast and you preserve it. Let it go and you lose it.’ How in your way does one recover and preserve his original nature?”

“I know of no other nature than the one I presently ‘have’, replied Zhouzi. “But if you must believe in another you, then you will find it somewhere between ‘I’ and ‘me’.”

“But Master,” exclaimed the Confucian, “this is but an emptiness which the self does span!”

“You have found it. Now to preserve it, let it be.”
