Shhhhh! Maybe No One Will Notice

Ooh, now the plot thickens. According to the Guardian, the fellow known as "Raymond Davis", who is being held by Pakistani authorities for murder, is not a diplomat at all. He is not employed by the US Embassy either. No, it has been confirmed that this fellow is a spy with the CIA. (Spies aren't covered by diplomatic immunity.)

In and of itself, this revelation is not surprising. All countries use spies. The part of this story that galls me is
A number of US media outlets learned about Davis's CIA role but have kept it under wraps at the request of the Obama administration. A Colorado television station, 9NEWS, made a connection after speaking to Davis's wife. She referred its inquiries to a number in Washington which turned out to be the CIA. The station removed the CIA reference from its website at the request of the US government...
Now why would the Obama administration want to keep the truth under wraps, particularly since this information is being widely reported in Europe?

Any thinking person KNOWS the answer. It wouldn't play well in the US for our propaganda purposes. Obama wants to make it appear as if Pakistan is behaving badly by not following international law. He wants to convince the American public that those "bad Muslims" are playing dirty poker.

But what is even worse about this episode is that the mainstream media is going along with it!! Their job is to undercover facts and report them. It is not their job to hide the truth to further the government's desire for favorable propaganda.

I'm not suggesting that there are not times in which the media might hold back key information. There are times when certain information could put lives at risk or cause some other type of serious problems.

However, it is rather obvious that this is not the case in this situation. The European and Pakistani public now knows this man is a spy. US and Pakistani officials know it too. Consequently, what sort of danger would it cause if the American public was let in on this little not-so-secret secret?

  1. Well, there's always the danger that when one spy is outed, his contacts and associates are now in peril as well.

But, once the names are out there, they're out there. No sense in hiding it further.
