The Simple Way, Part 15

The Simple Way
The Life & Teachings of Zhouzi
by Scott Bradley

Two young brothers approached the Master in the hall and asked to be admitted into the community.

“And your parents? Where are they and do they agree?” asked Zhouzi.

“Our parents have left this world, Master. Our sister has married and our elder brother is a successful merchant.”

“And what do you seek among us?”

“We would become buddhas, Master!”

“Alas!” exclaimed Zhouzi. “You have come to the wrong place! Look about you; what do you see?”

“We see many men, followers of the Way, Master.”

“Men there are, but no Way and no buddhas. If you wish to realize your humanity among us, you are most welcome. But here we know of neither buddhas nor becoming.”
