Tao of Weather

For two days straight, the skies have opened up. By midnight, I would guess we will have received more than 5 inches of rain. Yet, during a brief period today, the sun came out. It didn't last long, but it made an appearance, nonetheless.

One of my great joys with living on the southwest Washington coast is that it provides constant reminders about the Taoist emphasis on the cycles of life. While we are beset most of the year with one storm after another, intermingled with these storms are tranquil periods on most days. It offers a seamless cycle between storm, tranquility, storm, tranquility, storm...Each flows into the other.

And that pattern is very representative of our lives, in general. We have highs and lows, good times and bad, productive moments and lazy periods. Sometimes the changes are sudden or abrupt; most of the time, however, the changes are subtle and we don't even recognize them as they occur.

A moment ago it was sunny. Now, it's raining cats and dogs again. :-)
