The Directional Challenge

In my last post, I wrote about not falling for the notion that we each are powerless. We possess the power to transform ourselves. It is certainly not an easy thing to accomplish; it takes dedication and work. It is also not an undertaking that can ever be completed. Each time we arrive at one level of consciousness, there is another one beyond.

I have often wondered why there are SO MANY PEOPLE who present themselves as those individuals with THE answers. "I've found the ultimate truth. If you follow my ten-step process or buy my books or blah blah blah, you too can learn my truth and be rich, happy, powerful or blah blah blah!"

Recently, I realized an explanation has been sitting there at the end of my nose. It became so obvious to me that I am amazed I didn't notice it before. I have surmised that a chief reason that there are so many self-proclaimed gurus and teachers is that it's far easier to tell others how to live their lives than it is to focus one's attention on oneself!

Life is so much easier when you don't have to do any heavy lifting. If you pompously believe that you have all the answers, you will see no need to delve inside yourself to examine who you are or what you aim to be. So, instead of focusing on your own shortcomings and areas that need improvement, you will badger others to do the kind of work you yourself are loathe to do.

And let's be honest! Most people don't like pain. They don't like uncertainty and they don't like looking at their own blemishes in the mirror. It so much more fun to point out other people's blemishes.

But if we want to grow throughout this life, the direction we need to head is inside ourselves. We need to have the courage to examine ourselves, warts and all. It is only when we can see the person we are on the inside that we can begin to harness the power we alone possess -- the power to be all we can be.

No one else can harness the power for us. It is something we each must do on our own.
