133 - The Tie That Binds

There is no barrel until the cooper builds it. Until then, there are pieces of straight-grained wood, shavings, a round bottom, and metal bands, but there is no barrel. All parts are there, but they need to be composed in order to take shape. It is the same with the facets of our personalities.
~ from 365 Tao: Daily Meditations, Entry 133 ~
What holds your personality together? There needs to be a core symmetry that shapes the person each of us is and will be.

If our personalities merely are a hodgepodge of disconnected parts, we will drift through life like a rudderless ship. We will find ourselves at the mercy of the winds of society; at times sailing along blithely and at other times crashing into the rocks again and again.

Tao offers a tether to keep us centered and balanced. All we have to do is grab hold of it, but most of us shy away.

  2. Yes, it's a great book with an inspiring page for every day of the year. If you'd like a better intro to it, check out Changing Places. Donna utilizes the book a lot in her writings.
