5 - Contemplative Stillness

In a cave, all outer sounds are smothered by rock and earth, but this makes the sounds of one's own heartbeat and breath audible. In the same way, contemplative stillness turns us away from everyday clamor but allows us to hear the subtle in our own lives.
~ from 365 Tao: Daily Meditations, Entry 5 ~
Last night, as I fell to sleep, I heard the mournful howls of coyotes in the distance. Were they truly howling or was I just dreaming? Maybe I was a howling coyote who dreamed of a person sleeping.

After the howling calmed down, it was silent.

  1. The rhythm of life goes on all around us, mostly unheard.
Stillness is as valuable as action.

  2. Music is only beautiful because of the emptiness (silence) between the notes...the usefulness of the cup is in its emptiness...the coyote's howl is engaging only after it is silent...great post.
