We should remember that the legendary Lao Tzu did not live in peaceful times! He lived during the "Warring States" period of Chinese history. Feudal lords were duking it out amongst themselves and much of the peasantry was paying the ultimate price.Looking back through the annals of history, every warring nation ultimately perishes. It doesn't matter what period of history we're speaking of, it's a hard and fast rule. Too bad the leaders of the government of the United States aren't history buffs!
