Laozi As a Redbird

Trey Smith

If you read Laozi's various descriptions of the sage in the Tao Te Ching, it is of a person who is compassionate, just, humble and makes everyone around them a better person. It sounds like a mythical character, doesn't it?

While each of us has imperfections, some people are able to rise above them. In my mind's eye, the world lost one of those special individuals a week ago. Though known here in the States primarily as a Hall of Fame baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals, Stan Musial was a great human being. As has been stated by many people -- including those at his memorial -- no one who ever knew the man had an ill word to say about him. He was a man who loved and was loved by so many.

What greater thing could be said about a person.
