Those "Powerless" Powerbrokers

Trey Smith

By their very nature, politicians are strange creatures. On the one hand, they spend inordinate amounts of time and money trying to convince voters of their power. "Elect me and I'll get the job done!" On the other hand, when they are caught ignoring important issues, they turn around to act as if they are powerless to do anything about it. David Sirota makes this point in a recent column.
In light of horrific wildfires, a historic drought and now the destruction wrought by Hurricane Sandy, the political understatement of the year has to be President Obama’s recent comment to MTV. Asked about climate change’s absence from all presidential debates for the first time in a generation, he said, “I am surprised it didn’t come up.”
That is an absolutely nonsensical statement when you consider that Obama and Romney basically pre-scripted their three televised presidential debates! If either candidate wanted to address the subject, there was NOTHING standing in their way...except themselves.
