Neck and Neck

Trey Smith

Tomorrow is Election Day in the US and, for the life of me, it's hard to believe that the race for president is neck and neck. While I have spent a good deal of time on this blog pointing out the similarities on the issues of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, I will be the first to admit that there is something tangible that separates the two.

Barack Obama exudes charisma and Mitt Romney decidedly does not.

Obama looks good on TV and in person. He looks and sounds intelligent. He tends to have a way with words and he's very adept at making citizens believe he's on "their side."

Romney, on the other hand, comes off as a pompous doofus! He looks uncomfortable in front of cameras or crowds of people. He has spent the better part of the campaign sticking his foot in his mouth, then pulling it out, only to stick in again. And Romney has had a very difficult time trying to convince ANYONE he's even remotely on their side.

Yet, despite this glaring difference, this race looks like it could be a toss-up.

What does this tell me? Two things.

First, we continue to live in a very racist society! If Obama had white skin, he wouldn't face half or more of the vitriol he has been subjected to. There are millions of voters out there who simply can't wrap their heads around the concept of a non-white president. It makes no difference what Obama stands for -- which is the sole basis of why I refuse to vote for him -- these people would vote for a rock rather than a black man.

Second, Obama has run a miserable campaign. Notwithstanding the racist element, if he can't defeat a doofus like Romney, he doesn't deserve a second term! Romney has met no issue of which he can be consistent on. He changes his stance on this or that like the rest of us change our socks every morning. Because he can't seem to stay on theme, one would think it would have been child's play to leave him in the dust weeks ago.

And yet, if you believe the national polls, there is only a 1 or 2 percent difference between the two.

For months, I have said that Romney didn't stand a chance. I truly believed that. But here we are and he DOES have a chance. In a day or two, we might learn that Mitt Romney is the President-Elect.

Imagine that!
