Let Them Eat Dirt

Trey Smith

One of the worst aspects of capitalism is the glee many corporate big wigs express when things, in general, are not going so well. Every time there is some type of calamity or a situation that negatively impacts a good many people, you can be assured that some fat cats are licking their chops because other people's agony and desperation will fuel ever greater profit margins.

In a story in The Guardian about 10 days ago, the head of a food trading conglomerate couldn't contain his glee at the drought gripping much of the US because he can't wait to "exploit soaring prices."

You see, he has no compassion for the farmers who may go bankrupt due negligible yields or the billions of the world's poor who will struggle to feed themselves in the coming months. None of that matters to him. No, what matters is that his company stands a good chance of becoming more powerful and wealthy.

While capitalism itself is amoral, those who desire to reap benefits due to the suffering of others are immoral!
