Three nuclear weapons abolitionists, including one from Duluth, Minnesota, who snuck into the not-so-high-security Y-12 nuclear weapons site in Oak Ridge, Tenn. in July, — after merely snipping their way through chain-link fences — have humiliated the National Nuclear Security Administration.Since 9/11, Americans have been told that no expense will be spared to insure that the homeland is secure. To show how serious the government is in this regard, we've seen one civil right and freedom after another impinged upon or eliminated in order to keep us "safe." So how is it that three senior citizens simply can waltz into a top security area with little trouble?
The militarized NNSA is supposed to keep all uninvited persons away from the extremely dangerous and highly volatile uranium-235, uranium-238, beryllium, lithium deuteride and other deadly materials that are machined by Y-12 workers into thermonuclear or hydrogen bombs — what the White House and presidential hopefuls call “options” always “on the table.”
On July 28, these muscular security teams and state-of-the-art barricades couldn’t even keep out an 82-year old nun, Sr. Megan Rice of New York City, and her two late-middle-aged pacifist accomplices, Michael Walli, 63, of Washington, DC, and Greg Boertje-Obed, 57, of Duluth.
~ from Nuclear Security Unmasked by John LaForge ~
These sorts of actions have been occurring for the last two or three generations. Ever since the US become neck deep in the Cold War, peace activists have protested the development and use of nuclear weapons. And, ever since the very beginning, aging nuns and other peaceniks routinely have been able to breach security with little trouble!! If a bunch of people motivated by nothing more than sending a message of peace AND who often go out of their way to be caught and arrested can penetrate inside some of America's most dangerous facilities, how safe are we really from people who have far less than honorable intentions?
It's crazy to realize that you can't get on an airplane these days without being subjected to a humiliating bodily search, but armed with a pair of wire-cutters, you can slip unnoticed onto a nuclear facility!
What should actions like those of Sister Rice and her cohorts tell us? It should tell us that the Department of Homeland Security is a sham! All this money and all these efforts really aren't about keeping us safe; they are about stealing our money and shredding our rights.
Simple as that.
