Red States

Trey Smith

Almost every American is now familiar with the maps of our country which divide the states into blue ones (Democrat-leaning) and red ones (Republican-leaning). While such maps may be useful in the realm of politics, I was looking at a different kind of map at midday today and on this map almost every state in the continental US was red!

No, we haven't all turned conservative. This map dealt with temperatures and 90% of the country is seeing a high temperature of 80 degrees or above. In many locales, it is far, far above that threshold.

There seems to be only one region that is not bathed in red -- the region I call home. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we enjoyed a day with partly cloudy skies and temperatures topping out into the mid 60s. In my mind's eye, this is about the perfect kind of day: not too hot and not too cold. Just beautifully pleasant.

  1. I once read that 72 degrees -- or thereabouts -- is the ideal temperature for humans. That assessment was based on studies that found at temperatures close to 72, the body neither works to cool itself off, nor works to warm itself either. But that was a long time ago. I wonder if those studies were ever confirmed?
