Tao Bible - Matthew 5:7

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
~ King James Version ~

After a bitter quarrel, some resentment must remain.
What can one do about it?
Therefore the sage keeps his half of the bargain
But does not exact his due.
~ from Verse 79 of the Tao Te Ching ~
It's been said that nobody likes a sore loser -- it's just as true for winners! When we exact our due, we cause resentment to build up. The "loser" is filled with the desire to avenge the defeat. We set the stage for perpetual animosity.

If we are as respectful in victory as we are in defeat, we earn the respect of others. When people respect you, they are more apt to treat you kindly, whatever the circumstance or situation.
