Line by Line - Verse 67, Line 10

economy, and are all for being liberal;
~ James Legge translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, 1891 ~

They abandon economy, but try to be generous;
~ Gia-fu Feng and Jane English translation, published by Vintage Books, 1989 ~

Reaches widely but discards conservation
~ Derek Lin translation, from Tao Te Ching: Annotated & Explained, published by SkyLight Paths, 2006 ~

They try to be generous
but they don't practice moderation
in their own lives.

~ Ron Hogan rendition, from Beatrice.com, 2004 ~
Regardless of how much or how little we have, if we exercise moderation, we almost always have something to share with others. It may not be a lot, but a small amount from someone who doesn't have much is a more meaningful gift than a similar amount from someone who has a great deal!
