As Lovable As a Teddy Bear

Trey Smith

According to a recent article posted at Salon.com, the folks at the Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems International are worried that Americans have gotten the wrong idea about drones. Consequently, to better inform us, they are preparing a slick public relations campaign that will allow us to embrace drones as never before.

Only in America would executives of lethal weapons even think of backing a pr blitz to try to put a smiley face on something that has killed thousands over the past decade! Only in America would corporations devise a strategy to make a merchant of death seem as lovable as a teddy bear!

But there is a reason why American executives come up with these sorts of plans again and again. The vast majority of the American public is so damn gullible that it will probably work!

It's sad to say, but too many of my countrymen could be sold almost ANY bill of goods, provided that it is packaged effectively. I mean, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if the trade association for nuclear reactors convinced a significant portion of the American population that radioactive waste poses no safety problems when added to drinking water.

You certainly couldn't sell that nonsensical idea to Europeans, but Americans...we actually might slurp it up!
