As Ron Hogan points to, mores change with the generations. What was considered right and honest in, say, the 1830s doesn't match up with what we believe is right and honest today.

In biblical times (as well as the 1830s), the ownership of one human being by another -- slavery -- was not viewed as an evil. In fact, it was expected of the well-to-do family. Notwithstanding the most conservative elements in our society, slavery today is viewed by most as an abomination.
