A Gay 'Ol Time

Trey Smith

On Monday, Washington Governor Chris Gregoire did something really neat: She signed a bill making gay marriage legal in our state!! While I have not been overly enamored with much of the legislation coming out of Olympia lately, the signing of this particular bill makes me proud to call myself a Washingtonian.

The bill won't go into effect until June, if even then, because the religious "defense of marriage" forces have promised to have a citizen ballot initiative ready to go. If they are able to collect enough signatures -- a foregone conclusion -- the law will be put on hold until the voting public has their opportunity to weigh in.

Aside from the fact an ancient book written by nomadic tribesman decrees that homosexuality is an abomination before the almighty creator, the other big selling point by those opposed to gay marriage is that allowing two men or two women to tie the knot somehow lessens the matrimony of heterosexual couples.

I have never understood this argument. How does letting Bill and Bob or Cindy and Jill get married impact my marriage to Della in any way, shape or form? Della and I have talked about this and the prospect of gay marriage doesn't threaten our relationship at all.

How could it?

  1. When your premisse is that homosexuality is an abomination then everything that the LGBT community does that follow heterosexual lines, such as marriage, is a major threat to you.

It's stupid, I know. But we have those narrowminded people in The Netherlands too.

  2. Sadly, the narrow-minded aren't contained in any one nation!
