Priorities

Trey Smith

Over the past 2 days, we've shared with you information about why PIPA and SOPA should be opposed strenuously. These two bills are designed to limit the freedom of people throughout the world. While I am a strident opponent of any legislation of this nature, I must admit that I am a bit flummoxed as to why so many average folks have gotten up in arms over the corporate behemoths trying to control the internet, while the majority of these same folks yawn when it comes to issues like opposing the military-industrial complex or standing up for civil liberties.

While limiting the freedom of anyone to share ideas and information is wrong, this pales in comparison to depriving people of the freedom TO LIVE! Look, it's one thing to be denied the ability to share a song from your favorite artist on FaceBook, but it's quite another thing to be denied the ability to breath or to be able to go about your daily business without having to worry about bombs dropping from the sky.

If the number of passionate individuals who have been working to thwart PIPA/SOPA instead worked to rid our world of imperialistic war, we might get somewhere! Governments might listen to us.

It's been reported that, at least, three of the sponsors of PIPA and SOPA have backed away from the legislation because of the amount and depth of the public outcry. So, why can't we put the same amount of energy into issues that matter just as much, if not more?

  1. I'm not sure. We do have things like AVAZ.ORG but with matters of war or oppression or so on which are worse and against our hearts they often seem so much more ingrained as to be able to reject them in a day, they seem more to take generations.

While I stand with you and others and say "why not freedom, equality and peace for all - right now"... it seems that people have generation old excuses. The SOPA was an easy sell as those willing to speak and that being spoken of is a decade old and so was fresh and not doused in age old opinion.
