Huainanzi - Entry 44

If a rule is not straight, it cannot be used to make a square; if a compass is not correct, it cannot be used to make a circle. The individual is the rule and compass of affairs: no one has heard of being able to rectify others while being crooked oneself.

The same sentiment can be expressed in a more popular saying: People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!

Let's face it. One reason to lead a virtuous life is to ensure that we don't criticize others for the same wrongs we ourselves commit. No one likes being scolded by someone who doesn't walk their talk. It's like the coffee pot calling the kettle black.

How can we lead by example if we don't model supreme virtue in all we think and do?
