Tao Bible - Jeremiah 8:8-9

How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain. The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?
~ King James version ~

When the great Tao is forgotten,
Kindness and morality arise.
When wisdom and intelligence are born,
The great pretense begins.
~ from Verse 18 of the Tao Te Ching ~
I think both passages above are stating much the same thing, albeit in their own sort of way. When we have to think to behave virtuously -- utilizing rules, rituals, mores or customs -- we only are showcasing that we are estranged from our original nature.
