Pretty Darn Amazing!

Trey Smith

Last night two teams met to decide who would be this year's champion of NCAA Division III football. When the dust had settled, one team scored 13 points and the other 10. The players on the winning team were jubilant, while the players on the losing team were crestfallen.

But that's not why I'm sharing this bit of sports news. While winning and losing certainly are important to the supporters of each school, there was something else far more significant about this particular game.

There are 239 teams in NCAA Division III football, yet just two teams -- the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Mount Union -- have played each other in the championship game for 7 years in a row! What are the mathematical odds of something like that happening? They must be astronomical!

For the third year in a row, Whitewater took home the crown. They haven't lost a game since Mount Union defeated them in the 2008 Championship Game. That too is really amazing.

Well, I could ramble on a bit more about this remarkable run by these two teams, but I need to catch some shuteye. I will be up very early in the morning to watch my alma mater -- Pittsburg State University -- square off on ESPN2 with Wayne State University for the NCAA Division II Football Championship.

GO GORILLAS!!
