Note to Bloomberg: Read Sun Tzu

Two or three days ago Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that Zuccotti Park would be "closed for cleaning" purposes for 12 hours or so beginning at 7:00 am this morning. Given this amount of lead time, Occupy Wall Street (OWS) amassed nearly 4,000 protesters to defend the park and, as of 6:20 am today, the authorities back down (I was up watching the live feed). While you all know that I am solidly with OWS, one has to wonder about the idiotic strategy New York's mayor seems to be operating from.

With the focus of the world on Zuccotti Park, it makes no sense at all for the authorities to telegraph beforehand what they plan to undertake. Sudden and unannounced moves are far more likely to be successful. That's the basic strategy that OWS is employing and so, in this instance, it would be a good thing (for the police-state, that is) to spend some time reading Sun Tzu: The Art of War.

I'm pleased, however, that Bloomberg et.al. appear too haughty and arrogant to utilize time-honored strategies. They appear mesmerized by their own self-defined power. This often is the undoing of the powers that be. I hope the mayor continues to deploy self-defeating strategies, so that OWS continues to grow in numbers and strength.
