There is an anchor to what we have become that keeps us at the Sea of Self. While walking our spiritual paths, we all feel its tethering pull at times. A dissatisfaction arises along with questioning this imprisoning binding within, and a deeper spiritual quest of inquiry begins. This transcendental movement is rooted with a desire to be truly free from the grips of this grappling iron within.
This described is what I call the birth of the dark night of the soul. This is when our soul is in question by our own soul. It is when all the shallow trivialities of the temporary world including all its spiritual hearsay no longer shore up a shaky sense of self. This is a very lonely time of uncharted vulnerability. It is in these deep moments of extreme naked subjection when we see and learn the most about our self. Self-knowledge obtained is not always a happy hop, skip, and a jump.
