Some Thoughts on the London Riots

Politicians don't represent the interests of people who don't vote. They barely care about the people who do vote. They look after the corporations who get them elected.

*************************

These young people have no sense of community because they haven't been given one. They have no stake in society because Cameron's mentor Margaret Thatcher told us there's no such thing.

If we don't want our young people to tear apart our communities then don't let people in power tear apart the values that hold our communities together.

**************************

As you have by now surely noticed, I don't know enough about politics to ponder a solution and my hands are sticky with blood money from representing corporate interests through film, television and commercials, venerating, through my endorsements and celebrity, products and a lifestyle that contributes to the alienation of an increasingly dissatisfied underclass. But I know, as we all intuitively know, the solution is all around us and it isn't political, it is spiritual. Gandhi said: "Be the change you want to see in the world."

***************************

As we sweep away the mistakes made in the selfish, nocturnal darkness we must ensure that, amidst the broken glass and sadness, we don't sweep away the youth lost amongst the shards in the shadows cast by the new dawn.

Brand is an actor/comedian that I have only vaguely heard of. I can't name a movie or TV program that he's been in. That said, I think his article provides some riveting commentary on the chaotic bloodletting going on in the streets of London...something that may be coming soon to cities of the US!

  1. I've read that one Trey, put simply, I think he's right.

I have a deep sense of foreboding about the future, but then what did we expect? People are tormented with a vision of the "consumerist dream" then left unable to do anything to satiate those desires. They are then left unrepresented, given no effective voice and left feeling that they just don't matter. I'm only surprised it took this long to blow up.

The more I hear in the media, the less I trust our elected representatives to be able to do anything about it.

  2. Good to see someone with a higher profile at least acknowledge the blood on their hands, even if it is indirect. Gives me a small sliver of hope that while things will inevitably get worse, we may yet be able to salvage something good from the ashes.
