He Saved Me

On Saturday night, there was a tragedy at the Indiana State Fair that has claimed 5 lives to date and injured scores more, some critically. As almost always happens in these types of situations, some people -- quite randomly -- narrowly missed being part of the fatality list.

While I have yet to read any personal testimonies from this specific accident which reference God, Jesus or an angel stepping in to save this or that person, these kinds of assertions frequently become part of the story of such events.

This has led me to wonder something. For those individuals who believe in both God and Satan, how do they know that it was the former and not the latter that is responsible for their miraculous ability to cheat death? We often hear tales of people "selling their soul to the devil," so maybe, in their moment of desperation, that is what they ended up doing.

One could posit that it was God or one of his angels who escorted those who died to wherever it is that we go when this life ends. God was there to provide his bounty of love as medicine for the dying people's suffering and anguish. Those who lived, on the other hand, were escorted back to life by the imp himself.

I know this is rampant speculation in regards to a belief system I don't share. As anyone who has read this blog for almost any length of time knows, I don't believe in God, Satan, Heaven or Hell. But since some people live and some people die in these sorts of tragic circumstances, I am always left to wonder why some people think that a benevolent supernatural entity saved them, but not the person standing next to them or 10 feet over.

The ready-made explanation is that "God works in mysterious ways." All I'm saying is that, since the workings are mysterious, how can anyone really know if it's the good witch or the bad witch who is working her magic?
