Tao Bible - Ecclesiastes 3:7

A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
~ King James version ~

Teaching without words and work without doing
Are understood by very few.
~ from Verse 43 of the Tao Te Ching ~
We live in a world of noise. Some of it is meaningful and a lot of it is not. It often can be quite difficult to escape the noise, particularly for those who live in major urban areas.

But just as there are times we need to express ourselves, there are times we need to keep our peace. If noise -- both internal and external -- is all we ever hear, it can drown out the simple, the humble and the heart.

  1. I would say we live in a world of sound; noise--unwanted sound-- is the meaningless part. I would never call the birdsong out my window "noise"; but the unbalanced vibration of my electric fan is certainly noise. The trick is to separate the noise from the meaningful signal. Shortwave and ham radio listeners get very good at this.

    Did you ever see Tim Robbins's movie "Noise"? Not a great movie, but if car alarms get on your nerves, it's kind of fun. Or maybe car alarms are "meaninful" noise.
