So Many Zeros

Over the past 2 months or so, the figures being tossed about, in regards to the debt ceiling debate, are simply mind boggling. $1 trillion. $2 trillion. $3 trillion. Even $4 trillion. A trillion has so many zeros that it makes a person's head spin!

Who knows which of these figure our erstwhile leaders will agree on.

I decided to do a little experiment involving calculations based on $3 trillion. I think it well illustrates why numbers with this many zeros simply do not compute in most people's brains.

Let's say that, over the course of your working life, you average earning $50,000 per year. Do you know how many years you would have to work to reach $3 trillion? The answer is 60,000 years or 600 centuries. Since we currently stand at the early part of the 21st century of the modern era, this means that you would have to work roughly 28 times as long as from 1 AD to the present to realize $3 trillion.

Me thinks any of would be one tired puppy!
