Strategic Planning

We Americans have always prided ourselves for our ingenuity. While that can-do spirit has taken quite a hit in the last decade or so, James Verone of Gastonia, North Carolina, is trying to win it back for us!

You see, Verone found that he had a bit of a problem. He had been laid off from his job of 17 years and, at age 59, has been unable to secure new employment. When he lost his job, he also lost his health care insurance and Verone has some nagging conditions plus a growth on his chest that needs medical attention.

Unlike many of his fellow citizens, Verone didn't sink into depression. He didn't throw up his hands and give up. No, he thought over his predicament and, utilizing age-old American know-how, he came up with a solution!

He decided to rob a local bank of one dollar. Yes, that's no misprint. $1. He handed a note to a teller stating that this was a robbery and he demanded a dollar. After the dollar bill had been handed over, he told the clerk that he would sit in a chair in the corner until the police arrived. And he did just that.

After his arrest, he was looked at by a nurse and a doctor appointment was scheduled.

So, the next time you hear someone say that American ingenuity is dead, tell them the tale of James Verone, a true go-getter in a rotten system that denies health care as a basic right.
